Before getting out of Dodge, the Senate passed the “Secure Fence Act of 2006” on an 80-19 vote (and here). The bill now goes to President Bush who has promised to sign the measure as “an interim step.”
Whatever, it’s a step in the right direction.
The bipartisan vote (26 Democrats voted to wall out illegal immigrants) is yet another wake-up call for the so-called “sleeping giant” and its advocates.
Sure, the crops rotting in the fields in California, Texas and other states show that, arguably, there’s a need for guest workers -- or new agricultural technologies.
But American citizenship should not be granted to every illegal alien who sneaks across the border, overstays his or her visa, or gives birth to an anchor baby.
