The Samuel DeWitt Proctor Conference, a coalition of progressive African American church leaders and their congregations, has organized the Katrina National Justice Commission “to document successes and failures (and here) in the local, state and federal response to Hurricane Katrina.”
Modeled after the 9/11 Commission, this independent body of minsters and communities activists will:
Identify critical next steps for long-term reconstruction and restoration plans that must be undertaken to ensure preparedness for disasters and emergencies in communities across the nation; and long-term public policies that may help eradicate racial and economic disparities made evident by this disaster.
Beginning today at 1 p.m., the commission will hold two days of hearings on Capitol Hill. The commissioners will hear testimony from evacuees, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, and representatives from the Joint Task Force Katrina, FEMA and the Red Cross, among others.
