OK, people, the weekend is over so let’s get it started. After finally clearing out my mailbox, it didn’t exactly bring a smile to my face when I came across a message from my buddy Jonathan (and here), who had sent me his piece on the shortage of black men. Jonathan’s a good guy so I ain't mad at him for reminding me that:
Most obviously, there are simply not enough black men to go around, especially as matches for the numbers of successful black women.
Between the premature deaths and the imprisoned, there are 2.8 million more black adult women than men. According to Dr. David Satcher, “the disparity between mortality rates for black and white women narrowed while the disparity between the rates for black and white men grew wider.”
That’s scary stuff. What’s even scarier is that the black gender gap is preventable since the higher mortality rates are attributable to higher rates of homicide and HIV/AIDS. And among my likely, um, suitors there is a higher risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and stroke.
So when I blog about health policy (here and here), I’m not trying to run you away. Rather, I want you all to take better care of yourselves so that there'll be fewer mad black women.
