This Los Angles Times headline, "Congress quietly returns to immigration," got my attention.
Sen. Richard J. Durbin reportedly will offer his "Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act" as an amendment to the Department of Defense authorization bill.
The DREAM Act grants amnesty to any illegal alien who claims he or she sneaked across the border before age 16 and completes two years of higher education or military service. These "anchor teens" can then sponsor their parents and other family members.
Prof. Kris W. Kobach is on the frontline in defending the rule of law. Kobach writes:
The DREAM Act (S. 774) is a nightmare. It is a massive amnesty that extends to the millions of illegal aliens who entered the United States before the age of 16. The illegal alien who applies for this amnesty is immediately rewarded with "conditional" lawful permanent resident (green card) status, which can be converted to a non-conditional green card in short order. The alien can then use his newly acquired status to seek green cards for the parents who brought him in illegally in the first place. In this way, it is also a backdoor amnesty for the millions of illegal aliens who brought their children with them to the United States.
What is less well known about the DREAM Act is that it also allows illegal aliens to receive in-state tuition rates at public universities, discriminating against U.S. citizens from out of state and law-abiding foreign students. It repeals a 1996 federal law that prohibits any state from offering in-state tuition rates to illegal aliens unless the state also offers in-state tuition rates to all U.S. citizens.
Under the DREAM Act, the Migration Policy Institute estimates more than one million "unauthorized youth" would become eligible for permanent legal status and put on a path to citizenship.
And under chain migration, their amnestied parents and other family members can then sponsor siblings, grandparents, cousins and on and on. Supporters of this nightmare legislation must think the American people are a chain of fools.
Dan Stein, president of Federation for American Immigration said:
While the kids may not have made the decision to break the law, the reason most parents migrate illegally is "to do better for their families." What better inducement could there be for illegal immigration than a green card and a subsidized college education for their kids?
If you're struggling to pay your student loans, worried about how you're going to pay for your child's college tuition or don't want your tax dollars diverted to pay for illegals to go to college, make some noise.
